A Revelation of God’s Grace
A Study in Ephesians
QUARTERLY AIM: The student will realize the presence of the grace of God in the life of a child of God and will be moved to Christ honoring conduct in his daily life.
Written by the apostle Paul from a lonely prison cell, the book of Ephesians furnishes a storehouse of spiritual resources for twenty-first century churches. The understanding and application of God’s grace is a key purpose of this epistle. Paul used the word grace twelve times in Ephesians. Grace is found at least once in chapters 1, 2, 3, 4 and 6. Throughout this study we will learn various ways God revealed His grace to His people. Love is another strong theme in Ephesians. He used the word fourteen times, at least once in each chapter. Jews and Gentiles in the church were to love each other with Christ’s love. This love found its source in God and was to be manifested toward Him and fellow saints.
Paul established the church at Ephesus on his third missionary journey, spending nearly three years among them (Acts 19:1—20:1). At the end of his third missionary journey, on his way to Jerusalem, Paul stopped at Miletus and called for the elders of the Ephesian church to meet with him. During this meeting Paul reviewed his ministry with them, warning them of false teachers from within and without, who would threaten to divide the church (Acts 20:29, 30). Their affection for the apostle was deep as “they all wept sore, and fell on Paul’s neck, and kissed him, sorrowing most of all for the words which he spake, that they should see his face no more” (Acts 20:37, 38).
The Ephesian church was one of the seven churches of Asia about which the apostle John wrote in the book of Revelation. It is noteworthy by that time, the Ephesian church had succeeded in keeping out false teachers (Rev. 2:2), but had lost the fervency of their first love for Christ (Rev. 2:4, 5).
We are indebted to Paul’s writing in the book of Ephesians for inspired insight on subjects like Christian unity, ministry, salvation, maturity, sober living, Christian homes and godly relationships. Thanks to this epistle we may understand the scope of God’s eternal purposes and grace in this life.
