Doctrines That Make a Difference
Our perspective greatly influences everything we see. If you were on a mountaintop looking down, you would get quite a different view than if you were deep in a valley looking up. This is as true spiritually as it is physically.
For many people, the view they have of humanity is that human beings are basically good, but they are subject to evil influences. That is, we have a good center or core, but sometimes we lose our bearings and go in wrong directions. This viewpoint and philosophy will lead us to treat others in a certain way.
The Bible view of humanity is different. The Bible teaches that mankind is basically sinful. At the core of every person there is a heart of sin, and man must deal with his sinful heart to do good. This is not to say that bad people don’t occasionally do good things; instead, it is saying that all are sinners who need to be saved, not good people who just need a tune-up.
Jesus did not come to give a checkup to people who were otherwise healthy. He came as the Great Physician to save everyone who was sick and dying in sin. This doctrine is sometimes called total hereditary depravity. Your viewpoint makes a real difference in your life. It will influence how you treat Christ and how you treat other people.
